Welding is the trade I trained in and the one most of my work comes back to.
Mild steel or stainless, one-off or a matched batch, in the workshop or on site. Gates and burglar bars for houses, structural columns and beams for builders, racking and trolleys for workshops, and furniture frames for people who want a piece that isn’t in a shop.
The part that matters isn’t the welding itself, it’s what happens either side of it. Steel that’s cut square and jigged before it’s tacked. Joints run in an order that keeps the frame flat instead of pulling it out of shape. Welds dressed back so the piece looks made rather than assembled. And on structural work, a bead you’d be happy to have photographed, because I’ll photograph it.

Common questions
What does a steel gate cost?
It depends on three things: the size of the opening, the section of steel, and the infill design. A plain pedestrian side gate is a fraction of a double driveway gate in heavier tube. I'd rather measure the opening and give you a real number than quote a range you can't hold me to, send me a photo on WhatsApp with the rough width and height and I can usually tell you the same day.
Do you work in stainless as well as mild steel?
Yes, both. Mild steel is the workhorse, cheaper, stronger for the money, and it takes paint well, so it suits gates, structural work and anything getting a colour. Stainless costs more and moves more as you weld it, but it needs no coating and the polished finish is the finish, which is why furniture and indoor work often goes that way.
Can you weld on site, or does the job have to come to you?
Both. Fabrication happens where it's easiest to work accurately, but plenty of jobs, structural steel, repairs to a gate that's already hung, anything fixed to a building, has to be done in place, and I'm set up for that.
Do you do structural steel for builders?
Yes, and a fair amount of my work is subcontract for residential builds. I fabricate and install to the engineer's detail. Base plates get welded right around and bolted through cast-in anchors, and every column gets checked for plumb on two faces before the nuts go down. The engineer signs the structure off; I make sure there's nothing for them to argue with.
How long does a job take?
A side gate is usually a few days from measure to install. Structural work depends entirely on the build programme. If the steel is holding up the roof, it gets prioritised accordingly. Tell me your deadline when you enquire and I'll tell you straight whether I can hit it.
