The part of a job nobody sees.
Welding is the trade I trained in. Everything else I do came from jobs where welding on its own was not enough.
I am Godern, and I have been on the tools for more than 15 years. I work out of Fourways and across the northern suburbs of Johannesburg.
Most of my week is steel. Gates and burglar bars for houses, columns and base plates for builders, table bases and stool frames in stainless for people who make furniture. The rest is whatever the job actually needs: a hardwood top for a steel frame, a pair of french doors sanded back and oiled, a room painted, an old door frame cut out and replaced.
What I care about is the part of a job nobody sees. A weld dressed flush so a piece looks made instead of assembled. A top rail rebated so the timber sits down into the steel and the edge line stays thin from across the room. A column checked for plumb on two faces before the nuts go down.
Nobody asks for any of that. It is the difference between work I am happy to photograph and work I would rather you did not look at too closely.
When somebody sends me a picture of one woven lampshade and asks for a set of frames to match it, that is a small job and a fussy one. It is also the kind I say yes to fastest.
