Big properties mean long perimeters, which means gates, pedestrian gates and burglar bars, and often repairs to steelwork that’s been in place for twenty or thirty years. A sagging driveway gate, cracked welds, hinges pulling out of a pillar: all usually repairable in place for far less than a replacement, and I’ll tell you straight if it isn’t worth it.
The older houses here also tend to have serious hardwood joinery, proper frames, french doors, sash windows. That’s the restoration work I most enjoy because the timber is better than anything you could buy to replace it.
