Steel and hardwood console table

The brief was a long, low console that could take weight without looking heavy.

The frame is mild steel square tube, welded up square and then ground flush at every joint, the part nobody sees and the part that decides whether a piece looks made or just assembled. The top rail is rebated so the hardwood sits into the steel rather than on top of it, which keeps the edge line thin from across the room.

Lower stretcher rails triangulate the legs so the whole thing stays rigid at full length, and give you a shelf you can actually load.

Once the welds were dressed, the steel was primed and finished matt black and the hardwood was stained and oiled by hand to lift the grain.
