Side gates built to the opening rather than bought off a rack, in mild steel and in stainless, with the infill spacing set so nothing gets a hand through.
A gate is the one thing on a property that gets used several times a day and has to keep working for years, so it is worth getting the boring parts right.
These are built to the measured opening rather than trimmed to fit a standard frame. The stiles are square tube with solid bar infill, and the spacing is set deliberately tight, a gate with a generous gap between bars is a gate someone can reach through to the latch.
The mild steel gates go out in red-oxide primer so they’re protected in transit and on site, ready for a topcoat in whatever colour the house needs. The stainless one needed no coating at all: welds dressed, then polished back.
Hinges are welded to the frame, not to the wall, so the load goes where it should and the gate can be lifted off later if it ever needs work.
