Structural steel columns
Fabricated columns with welded base plates, set out and plumbed on a live residential build in the northern suburbs.
This is subcontract work on a residential build, the kind of job where the steel goes in before the roof and everything after it depends on the steel being right.
Each column is box section with a base plate welded on square and a head plate to take the beam above. The base plates are bolted down through four cast-in anchors, and the column is welded to the plate right around its perimeter rather than tacked on the corners.
The close-up is there on purpose. On a structural job the weld is the product, and it’s the one thing you can’t inspect once it’s painted and boxed in.
Every column was checked for plumb on two faces before the nuts went down.
